The DHS ONE Club is not only unique in that it is the only high school ONE Club in the world (all other ONE Clubs being on college campuses), but it has perhaps the most unique and inspiring history of any club ever.  Alison Bowman and Sam Griffith were inspired to create the club after the passing of their close friend, Laurence Carolin.  In the face of death, with a brain tumor the size of a golf ball growing inside of him, all Laurence wanted to do was to help others.  So, when he found out that Make-a-Wish could not schedule him a meeting with his idol, Bono, he decided to donate all $5,000 to the United Nations Foundation.  When Bono found out that Laurence had donated all that money to his own cause, he wanted to meet Laurence.

But Laurence isn't the only Dexter student who made a difference.  Close friends of Laurence Carolin, Alison Bowman and Samantha Griffith, founded the DHS ONE Club in 2011, in honor of him.  Now, any DHS student can join in the fight against extreme poverty and do their part to mold the world into a better place.

The DHS ONE Club strives to educate the high school and local community about current issues that are plaguing certain areas of Africa.  Although our goal is primarily to raise awareness and strike a life-long interest in international aid and service, we also have unique fundraisers such as raising money to buy a family a goat or selling beadforlife bracelets made by women in Uganda so that they can go to school and become entrepreneurs, ultimately making enough money to feed their families comfortably.

Although the majority of our events take place in the high school cafeteria, our biggest event, Airplane Day, has been at Foggy Bottom the past four years.  To learn more about Airplane Day, see the above tab.
